Journal
Your character has a personal journal for you to log your character's adventures. This allows you to refer back to past events as desired, and it keeps Storytellers updated on your character's experiences in Silent Heaven. Writing in your character's journal also earns you +1 XP per day that you write an entry.
Your very first entry could be what happened when your character entered Silent Heaven, along with your character's reaction and feelings about it.
The only ones who can view your character's journal are yourself and Storytellers. No other characters, players, or staff may read another's journal entries. If a Storyteller has a regular character they play, the journal system will automatically block them from viewing any entries that involve their character or any group their character is a part of.
Storytellers may sometimes add entries to your character's journal when RP calls for it, such as a scene that involved an NPC, or to deliver information to the character. On rare occasion, an OOC entry may be added. When a storyteller adds an entry to your character's journal, you'll receive a notification the next time you log in. To read new entries, type INBOX.
INBOX
Your character's journal is semi-IC. While it exists in your character's hotel room, you may read and write in it at any time, from any place. However, the information within the journal is OOC and it may not be used IC. Consider it a private thing that your character does subconsciously. They have no recollection of anything written, and they never look back at it.
To get started with your character's journal, type JOURNAL.
JOURNAL
You'll be presented with a menu that has 5 options: Add a new entry, view recent entries, search entries, categorize an entry, and close a storyline. The most important option is adding a new entry.
ADD A NEW ENTRY
Adding a new entry consists of 5 steps:
- Choose storyline
- Add characters
- Add a title
- Describe what happened
- Add any final thoughts (Optional)
After choosing to add a new entry, you'll be given a choice of what storyline to add it to. Storylines are a way of organizing your character's journal by grouping entries into similar activities or plots. Suppose, for example, you began a rivalry with another character and wanted to organize all your character's journal entries about that rivalry into a separate category. That's what storylines are for.
By default, you have 4 basic options:
OOC: Categorizing something as OOC is a way of adding an entry purely about OOC things, for example, if you're ill or busy or taking a break from Silent Heaven, an OOC entry is great for letting Storytellers know what's up.
UNCATEGORIZED: If you don't know how to categorize an entry, choose this option. You'll be able to categorize it later, using the "Categorize an entry" option from the main journal menu.
SOCIAL: A social scene is any scene not directly tied to any storyline. If your character was just relaxing and doing some bar RP or some other character development RP, you can tag it as SOCIAL.
DISCOVERY: A discovery scene is any scene where you met new characters or explored new places. Even if you didn't interact with another character, you can still count it as a discovery scene if you just went exploring.
You can have a maximum of 30 storylines at any given time, should you need that many. If you ever want to remove a storyline from your list, choose "Close a storyline" from the main journal menu. If you need to re-open a storyline, you can always add it again when adding a new entry.
Once you have your storyline chosen or created, you'll be asked to give your entry a title. A good title gives an overview of what happened in your scene or RP without being too vague or overly detailed. A snappy title makes it easy to remember what your character was doing at a glance. You can view and search through your entries with the main journal menu options "View recent entries" and "Search entries."
Next, you can list other characters that were involved. If this is an OOC entry or only your character was involved, you may either type your character's name or leave this blank.
Now, you get to describe what happened in the RP. Think of this like a condensed scene summary. Tell the beginning, middle and end. When and where did this take place? Who was there? What happened? Why did your character do what they did? How did your character feel and what are they going to do about it?
Entries don't need to be long. In fact, you're limited to 10 lines max per entry. If you need more than 10 lines, either pare it down, or separate what happened into two entries.
Journal entries need to be accurate and truthful. Please don't misrepresent events in your character's journal entries. Remember that OOC deception is against the rules. Keep that stuff to IC.
Once you're done writing your entry, you're given one more line where you can post your final thoughts. You may talk about your OOC feelings, involve NPCs off-screen, or say whatever's on your mind. This section is optional.
Lastly, you're given a chance to review your entry and either save it, cancel, or start over. You'll receive your +1 XP at the end of the day for writing a journal entry.
Happy journaling!
